SUMMARY:Learn about the Upcoming Solar Eclipse! Program for Kids
DESCRIPTION:Kids ages 5 and up are invited to a special program about the
solar eclipse on Saturday\, March 30 at 10 am in the library's Howard Room.
Carla Scocchi and Leah McCluskey\, staff from 4-H\, will share information
about solar eclipses\, along with guiding participants to create miniature
models of a solar eclipse using foam balls and wire. Everyone will also
get eclipse glasses to take home! On April 8\, 2024\, parts of Maine will
 experience a total solar eclipse\, a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity! A
total solar eclipse happens when the moon lies exactly between the sun and
the Earth\, casting its shadow on a small patch of the Earth’s
surface.\n\n \n\nCarla Scocchi and Leah McCluskey are two of three 4-H
staff who serve Hancock County. Their roles are focused on educating and
empowering youth through hands-on and community-based experiences\, with
self-directed learning and collaborations. Carla is currently spending her
time on statewide programs like the 4-H Aquaponics Project and the 4-H Tick
Project! Leah is supporting our county 4-H clubs\, planning county events\,
and hosting local 4-H workshops!\n\n \n\n4-H is the positive youth
development education program of the University of Maine Cooperative
Extension. 4-H is the largest youth organization in the world! Youth ages
5-18 can join\, and you do not have to own an animal or raise livestock to
be a member of 4-H. 4-H programming is diverse and offerings include
activities in the areas of agriculture\, science (STEM)\, healthy living\,
and civic engagement. The 4-H model for Positive Youth Development is
successful because of its focus on positive and sustained relationships
between youth and adults\, activities that build essential life skills\,
and opportunities for youth to use these skills as participants and leaders
in valued community activities.\n\nThis program is made possible through
support from NASA's Science Activation program through the Learning
Ecosystems Northeast partnership. If you have any questions\, contact
Youth Services Librarian Claire Malina at claire.malina@bhpl.net or call
 374-5515.
