Reader Dog

Reader Dog In-Person

Kids ages 5 and up are invited to come to the Blue Hill Public Library to read to a dog!  A Registered Therapy Dog will be available to hear children read on the first and third Tuesdays of the month beginning in October starting at 3:30 pm.

Our first Registered Therapy Dog is Jeepers who is a 4-year-old Portuguese Water Dog who loves to swim and to do agility training. She loves children and is looking forward to hearing some good stories.  Other Registered Therapy Dogs will be available to listen to stories as the year goes on.

Dogs are certified through Alliance of Therapy Dogs and the R.E.A.D. (Reader Education Assistance Dogs) program.  The goal of the program is to improve the child’s reading skills and confidence in a unique and fun way.  The dog’s non-judgmental listening, with a wag or nudge inspires children to read with confidence.

Children have the opportunity to sign up for 15-minute sessions to read to Jeepers.  Reading sessions are done in a quiet place in the Larchwood Children’s Room.

This program is free and registration is required.  To sign up for a 15-minute session, email Claire at claire.malina@bhpl.net or call 374-5515.
