Readings on Race Discussion Group

Readings on Race Discussion Group Online

New members are invited to the library’s monthly discussion group, "Readings on Race," on Saturday, December 19 at 2:00 PM.

This month's book will be The Water Dancer by Ta-Nehisi Coates. This novel follows an unexpected journey that takes Hiram Walker, born into bondage, from the corrupt grandeur of Virginia’s proud plantations to desperate guerrilla cells in the wilderness, from the coffin of the deep South to dangerously utopic movements in the North. Even as he’s enlisted in the underground war between slavers and the enslaved, Hiram’s resolve to rescue the family he left behind endures. Copies of the book will be available to check out in advance at the library. Additional readings and more information can be found on the Readings on Race webpage.

Surry resident Kate Mrozicki facilitates the group. Kate is a farmer who believes in the power of difficult conversations to change our reality. She got to practice those conversations during years of working for The Food Project in Boston and is now raising small children in Surry.
