Readings on Race Discussion Group

Readings on Race Discussion Group Online

New members are invited to the library’s monthly discussion group, "Readings on Race," on Wednesday, October 14 at 1:00 PM.

This month's discussion will be on The Fire Next Time by James Baldwin. Published in 1963, it contains two essays, "My Dungeon Shook: Letter to my Nephew on the One Hundredth Anniversary of the Emancipation" and "Down at the Cross: Letter from a Region of My Mind."  According to the publisher, "The Fire Next Time galvanized the nation, gave passionate voice to the emerging civil rights movement—and still lights the way to understanding race in America today." Copies of the book are available to check out in advance at the library. Additional readings and more information can be found on the Readings on Race webpage.

Surry resident Kate Mrozicki facilitates the group. Kate is a farmer who believes in the power of difficult conversations to change our reality. She got to practice those conversations during years of working for The Food Project in Boston and is now raising small children in Surry. This event is free and everyone is welcome. This discussion will be held online via Zoom. Participants can register by calling the library at 374-5515 or using the library's online calendar at www.bhpl.net.
