Book Discussion: Lab Girl by Hope Jahren

Book Discussion: Lab Girl by Hope Jahren Online

Heather Richard, Research Project Coordinator at the Shaw Institute, will lead an online book discussion on Lab Girl by Hope Jahren.

Acclaimed scientist Hope Jahren has built three laboratories in which she's studied trees, flowers, seeds, and soil. Her first book is a revelatory treatise on plant life—but it is also so much more. Lab Girl is a book about work, love, and the mountains that can be moved when those two things come together. It is told through Jahren's stories: about her childhood in rural Minnesota with an uncompromising mother and a father who encouraged hours of play in his classroom's labs; about how she found a sanctuary in science, and learned to perform lab work done "with both the heart and the hands"; and about the inevitable disappointments, but also the triumphs and exhilarating discoveries, of scientific work.

Heather Richard grew up in Southern Maine fascinated by the natural world. She received a M.S. in marine biology from San Francisco State where she studied microplastics. She currently works as the Research Projects Coordinator at the Shaw Institute.

This discussion group is sponsored by the library and run in conjunction with "The Big Read" taking place at the Ellsworth Public Library. All Big Read events are free and open to the public, thanks to a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts and support from Arts Midwest. This program is free and open to everyone, but space is limited so advance registration is required. Participants who register will receive the link to join via Zoom. Books will be provided by the library in advance of the discussion.
