Art History and Hands on Screening: Seurat extra! Sunday in the Park with George In-Person

The Blue Hill Public Library is sponsoring a film and hands-on arts series with local artist and gallery-owner Margret Baldwin. Margret will host an extra art history film screening on Seurat: Steven Sondheim's 1984 musical Sunday in the Park with George

From Musical Theater International: "Inspired by the painting, A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte by Georges Seurat, Sunday in the Park with George, Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine's stunning masterpiece, merges past and present into beautiful, poignant truths about life, love and the creation of art. One of the most acclaimed musicals of our time, this moving study of the enigmatic painter, Georges Seurat, won a Pulitzer Prize and was nominated for an astounding ten Tony Awards, including Best Musical.

The days leading up to the completion of his most famous painting, A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte, Georges Seurat is struggling to make meaningful art and maintaining a relationship with his lover, Dot. Amid the scorn of the artistic community, Seurat's artistic ability thrives while his love diminishes. A century later, Seurat's descendant – named George and also an artist – finds himself burnt out and in search of what artistic path to follow, but he finds the answer to his future in the past.

An ensemble of strong singing actors performs this challenging and heartbreaking work about our need to connect to the past, present and future. Sunday in the Park with George features two coveted starring roles made famous by the Broadway performances of Mandy Patinkin and Bernadette Peters. The show may be staged simply, as in its original workshop production, or with the grandeur of Seurat's masterpiece."

Margret is a certified art instructor with 25 years in the public school system and private teaching experience. She expanded her exposure to art and artists through her curatorial experience during eight years of employment at the Blue Hill Public Library. She has exhibited widely, and in the summer runs her neighborhood “Little Gallery” in Surry.

This program series is generously sponsored by the Friends of the Library. There will be additional copies of the movie on DVD available for loan, for anyone who can not make the screening.  For more information, please contact Olivia at oliviaz@bhpl.net or by calling the library at 374-5515.
