Saturday Matinee: Paris is Burning In-Person
All are welcome to the library for a movie matinee on Saturday, June 21 at 1:30 p.m in the Howard Room. The library will be showing Jennie Livingston's 1991 documentary Paris is Burning. Popcorn, tea, and coffee will be available for movie-viewing accompaniment.
"Where does voguing come from, and what, exactly, is throwing shade? This landmark documentary provides a vibrant snapshot of the 1980s through the eyes of New York City’s African American and Latinx Harlem drag-ball scene. Made over seven years, Paris Is Burning offers an intimate portrait of rival fashion 'houses,' from fierce contests for trophies to house mothers offering sustenance in a world rampant with homophobia, transphobia, racism, AIDS, and poverty. Featuring legendary voguers, drag queens, and trans women—including Willi Ninja, Pepper LaBeija, Dorian Corey, and Venus Xtravaganza—Paris Is Burning brings it, celebrating the joy of movement, the force of eloquence, and the draw of community."-Criterion Collection. Runtime: 1 hr, 18 min. Not rated.
This program is generously sponsored by the Friends of the Library, and is free and open to all. If you have any questions, contact Olivia at oliviaz@bhpl.net or call the library at 374-5515.
