Asian Calligraphy Workshop with Frederica Marshall In-Person
The Blue Hill Public Library is sponsoring a two-session Asian Calligraphy workshop with local artist Frederica Marshall, with the first session on Saturday, January 11 at 1PM, and the second session on Saturday, January 18 at 1PM. Experience the flow of the wind off the tip of the brush in this Asian Calligraphy workshop. Beginners with no experience are welcome and experts are also welcome!
In the first class, learn and practice the ten basic strokes and brush order of Japanese and Chinese calligraphy with a brush pen and brush and ink. You will learn how to write your name in Katakana Japanese characters and some Kanji power words.
The second class, we will practice with ink and brush to achieve the beautiful flow of this art. We will create calligraphy artwork on red paper decorated with a golden dragon, and make a Kanji scroll complete with a seal and your name in Katakana. Calligraphy is a meditative practice: with repetition, you become one with the brush.
All art materials are generously supplied by the Friends of the Library, and please wear clothing that doesn’t matter – ink does not wash out! This program is free and open to all, but space is limited, and registration is required and can be done through the library’s online interactive calendar. For more information, please email Assistant Director Kayleigh Thomas at kayleigh.thomas@bhpl.net or call the library at 374-5515.
