Blue Hill Legion Hall: Building Repair, Rework, Restoration In-Person
Have you noticed a large hole in the rear wall of the Legion Hall on Tenney Hill? Curious to learn more about their restoration efforts? The Blue Hill Public Library will present two opportunities for you to learn about the repair, rework, and restoration of the Blue Hill Legion Hall, also known as the Blue Hill Academy building. The first session is Monday December 2 at 1 PM, and the second session is Saturday December 7 at 1 PM. Both talks will be led by Legion Hall volunteer Butler Smythe.
The Blue Hill Academy building at 13 Tenny Hill in Blue Hill has been an iconic structure on Main Street in Blue Hill since it was built in 1833 to replace the Academy’s 1803 wooden structure at the same location. As the first secondary school in the town, it has seen and endured many changes in the last 190 years, and since May 1944 has been “owned” by Duffy-Wescott Post 85 of the American Legion, a veteran organization started in 1919. The Post was established in Blue Hill shortly after – but without a home at the time. The Legion Hall – as many refer to it now – is undergoing a major renovation and restoration which hopefully has garnered some attention.
This talk will help to provide some background on the building and answer some questions that the public may have, such as what has changed over time, what is happening to the building today and what has been found in that process? Please come and learn more about just what is in store for this landmark Blue Hill structure.
This program is free and open to the public, and will be held in the library's Howard Room. For more information, please contact Assistant Director Kayleigh Thomas at kayleigh.thomas[at]bhpl.net, or call the library at 374-5515.
