Kids' Author Event: Miquansis Sapiel

Kids' Author Event: Miquansis Sapiel In-Person

Kids are invited to a special author event with Minquansis Sapiel on Saturday, October 26, at 10 amLittle People of the Dawn, Minquansis’s charming children’s fantasy, acquaints readers with the Little People featured in Wabanaki legend as well as the Maine tribes’ beliefs and reverence for nature. In a program incorporating language, culture, imagination, and science, Minquansis will read from her book and introduce her audience to the homes and food sources that the Little People rely on and that enrich our soil and natural surroundings. Weather permitting, a portion of the presentation will take place outside on the library grounds. Recommended for ages 5 to 10.

Minquansis Sapiel (pronounced min-gwon-sis) is the author of the children’s book Little People of the Dawn, the story of a girl’s encounter with the Little People and her new connection with her own culture and language. An enrolled member of the Passamaquoddy Tribe, part of the Wabanaki Confederacy, Minquansis grew up overlooking Passamaquoddy Bay in Sipayik, one of the two Passamaquoddy reservations in Maine. In addition to a master's degree in social work, she has earned her captain’s license with plans to start Passamaquoddy Ecotours, a whale-watching business that would foster a better understanding of Passamaquoddy Bay and Wabanaki history and culture. She currently offers a Portland Explorer waterfront tour providing insights into Wabanaki spiritual beliefs, community life, and enduring connection with the land.

This workshop is cosponsored by Word, the Blue Hill literary arts festival, and by the Blue Hill Library.  For more information about the Word Festival, visit https://www.wordfestival.org/.  For more information, contact Claire at claire.malina@bhpl.net.
