Japanese Calligraphy for Teens

Japanese Calligraphy for Teens In-Person

Teens ages 12-17 are invited to join local artist Frederica Marshall for a workshop on Shodo, traditional Japanese calligraphy. This workshop will be in two parts on Wednesday April 3rd and 10th in the library's Howard room from 3:30-5 PM.

In the first session, participants will use a brush marker to learn and practice the 10 basic brushstrokes of Shodo calligraphy, and gain awareness of how to create words and Japanese characters on the page. Frederica will also share some of the history and picture origins of this beautiful form of writing. Participants will be given their brush marker to take home to practice what they've learned for the following week. In the second session, there will be some additional practice of the brushstrokes before Frederica teaches participants how to paint their names in Katakana, the Japanese phonetic alphabet, to make into a piece of art.

All materials will be provided for this event and is free thanks to the generosity of the Friends of the Library. Space is limited so please register through the library's online calender. It is recommended to wear clothing that can get dirty! The ink used in this class does not wash out. If you have any questions please contact Teen Services Librarian Kendall at kendall.chapman@bhpl.net.
