August Art Show Reception In-Person
Everyone is invited to join us for a reception for the August art show, Mountain Love, a group exhibition curated by local artists Leslie Anderson and Cheryl Coffin, along with Beth Dickens of Blue Hill Heritage Trust, on Friday, August 9th from 4:00 to 6:00 PM. This highly anticipated show is an August tradition at the library and raises funds for the library’s operations.
This year the show features artists’ interpretations of the higher elevation areas of Blue Hill Heritage Trust (BHHT) preserves, including oil paintings, works on paper, photographs, prints, and even a woven tartan. Blue Hill Mountain is an iconic symbol for this area, but BHHT also stewards several other place-defining high points, including John B. Mountain in Brooksville, Wallamatogus in Penobscot, and Caterpillar Hill in Sedgwick.
The exhibit includes works by 42 artists, selected by the curators. Leslie Anderson, artist and curator, remarked, “We are awed by the enthusiasm local artists have shown for this show. They are both grateful for the opportunity to show their work in a gallery, and inspired by their love of these BHHT properties.”
Artist Anne Reiter said about her experience, “For the Mountain Love exhibit, I went for a hike on Wallamatogus Mountain. I had never been there before and was captivated by the wind flowing over the open mountainside. There is an osprey nest on the cellular tower on the mountain. Watching the osprey soar over the mountain and come in for a landing on the tower made me want to be able to fly. What would it be like just to be able to float in the wind, high up over the blueberry barrens? That thought inspired me to paint Bird's Eye View.”
A portion of the proceeds from the sales of artwork will benefit the library. The Blue Hill Library is an independent non-profit organization that relies on the generosity of donors to meet its annual operating costs. The show will be open for viewing Monday through Saturday in August during library hours, with viewing of those works in the Howard Room subject to the meeting room schedule.
