Slaven Lecture Series: "Why Comics?" with Shannon Watters

Slaven Lecture Series: "Why Comics?" with Shannon Watters In-Person

On Saturday, July 29 at 6:00 PM the library will host artist and author of the popular Lumberjanes series, Shannon Watters, in the Adelaide Pearson Room, for a discussion on the magic of graphic novels. In the last decade, graphic novels have exploded in traditional publishing avenues, exposing more readers and writers than ever to sequential storytelling. What is it that makes the medium of comics so enduring, so expansive and so versatile? Words are cheap, yet the unique visual intimacy of the medium seduces more creative converts every year, and sells millions of books to folks of every age. What is it about words and pictures in little boxes that’s so magically distinct?

Shannon will introduce the basic language and concepts of comics as an artform, presenting how the medium proceeded from folded newsprint in back pockets to influencing prestige television shows and winning National Book Awards. Above all, however, this talk attempts to ask and answer...why comics? Shannon will discuss her unique perspective on the subject by sharing her expertise and experiences. There will also be time for audience Q&A.

Shannon Watters is the co-creator and co-writer of the New York Times-bestselling and award-winning hit comic book series Lumberjanes. Her new graphic novel Hollow is out now! She is also a former senior editor and the founder/head of "BOOM! Box Line" at "BOOM! Studios," the imprint behind critically acclaimed comics and graphic novels like Giant Days, The Backstagers, Lumberjanes, Fence, Goldie Vance, Heavy Vinyl, The Avant-Guards, and many, many others. She loves vintage nonsense, cooking elaborate meals, and funny words, and lives in Los Angeles.

This program is free and sponsored by the library thanks to the generosity of the Anahata Foundation. If you have questions please contact Teen Services Librarian Kendall at kendall.chapman@bhpl.net or 374-5515.
